What Do We Learn After The Cartwheel

As a gymnast and now a coach, gymnastics has taught me so much about life, people, and even myself. Gymnastics isn’t just about flips—it’s about the skills that stick with you, like respect, responsibility, and resilience. We tend to see kids’ sports as “just for fun,” but sports like gymnastics teach them essential life skills. Here are a few lessons I learned in the gym, beyond just mastering the skills.

Lesson #1: Facing Fears—“Yes, You’re Scared. Do It Anyway.

In gymnastics, kids are asked to do things that would terrify most people—flipping on a narrow beam or twisting in the air. Sure, progressions help make it feel possible, but the first time is still scary. I learned it’s okay to be afraid. Fear is natural; it’s just our brain’s way of saying, “Pay attention!” Success comes when we face our fears and act anyway. As a coach, watching a gymnast finally nail a skill after months of work is priceless. I face fears every day, just in different ways now, and gymnastics taught me how to push through.

Lesson #2: Embracing Failure—“Go Ahead and Fall.

We’re often taught to fear failure, but I believe failure is where 90% of our learning happens. Kids fall in gymnastics all the time, and it’s part of the process. They learn to get up, try again, and adjust. I’ve been injured before and certainly failed more times than I can count, but each time I was more motivated to try again. Yes, being an athlete creates a sense of resilience, but I cannot explain how fulfilling it is to actually feel resilient. To be able to say to yourself “I bounced back (no gymnastics pun intended). It motivates you, for sure, but the long lasting effect goes on long after. The resilience I built in the gym still drives me today—nothing can stop me when I make up my mind. Failing taught me to bounce back, and I’ve carried that lesson throughout my life.

Gymnastics teaches kids to reach higher and keep learning, and that’s what makes it so powerful. Life, like gymnastics, has no top end—there’s always more to learn and achieve. And honestly, isn’t that what makes it fun?
